• South Korea’s Ministry of Justice has extended the pilot e-group visa program for nationals of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam by an additional two years. This decision aims to attract more tourists from these countries and bolster the nation’s tourism industry.

Initially launched in June last year, the e-group visa program targets incentive tour groups, educational tour groups below the collegiate level, and regular tour groups. To qualify, groups must consist of at least three members, and all members must enter and exit South Korea using the same transportation method. Accredited travel agencies handle the visa applications through the Korea Visa Portal, streamlining the process for travellers.

The extension has already shown positive results. According to VN Express, group visits from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam more than doubled from 23,781 in early 2023 to 47,397 by year-end, reaching 56,427 in the first five months of 2024. This surge in tourism is projected to contribute $69.3 billion to South Korea’s economy, marking a 13.6 percent increase year-on-year. Employment in the tourism sector is also expected to exceed 1.4 million this year.

South Korea’s commitment to enhancing its tourism industry underscores its role as a premier destination for travellers worldwide. The government’s initiatives, including the forthcoming K-culture visa and expanded digital nomad visa, further highlight its dedication to fostering economic growth through tourism.
