• Thailand’s government has introduced significant changes to its visa and immigration rules, aimed at enhancing its appeal to digital nomads, remote workers, and long-term travelers. Starting from late June or early July 2024, the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) will allow digital nomads and participants in specific cultural activities to stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per visit on a multiple-entry basis, within five years. This initiative, approved by the Department of Consular Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is expected to attract a diverse group of long-term visitors.
In addition to the DTV, Thailand is extending its visa exemption period for visitors and short-term business travelers from 30 to 60 days for citizens from 93 countries. The number of countries eligible for Visa on Arrival (VOA) will also increase from 19 to 31. Digital nomads can now benefit from an extended visa duration of five years, up from the current 60 days, with each stay capped at 180 days. This is designed to cater to self-employed remote workers who wish to stay longer in Thailand.

Postgraduate students will be allowed to remain in Thailand for an additional year after graduation, and retirees will benefit from significantly reduced health insurance requirements. To streamline the entry process and enhance immigration efficiency, Thailand will establish a new Visa Policy Committee.

These changes are part of Thailand’s broader strategy to attract 40 million international tourists by the end of 2024, generating an estimated 3.5 trillion baht ($95.73 billion) in revenue. With over 28 million visitors in 2023, these new policies are set to further boost Thailand’s tourism sector.
